Drumless Backing Track Exercise 4 – This 16-bar exercise is built around a solid backbeat, with a short fill every fourth bar. It’s the kind of thing that works perfectly with the drumless backing tracks you’ll find all over YouTube. The goal here is to develop consistency, groove, and the ability to transition smoothly between timekeeping and fills.
Bass Drum Challenges
Beginners might find the bass drum pattern a little tricky at first, mainly because of its offbeat feel. The best way to get past this is to count carefully until the coordination becomes second nature. Bar 6 is another point to watch out for—it introduces a slight variation in the bass drum part that can throw you off if you’re not ready. It’s often worth isolating that bar, practising it slowly on its own, and then looping it together with the bar before.
Key Features
There are a few other elements to pay attention to:
Quaver hi-hats in the first and second lines.
Crotchet hi-hats in the third line, followed by crotchet ride cymbals in the fourth.
Semiquaver fills in bars 4, 8, and 16.
A double-stroke roll in the third fill (bar 12).
Crash cymbals marking the start of each line.
Working on Fills
The fills use semiquavers, but they’re not overly complex. Most beginners should find them manageable as long as they’re counting properly. Stickings are marked where they’ll be most helpful, which will keep you from getting tangled up when moving around the kit.
Dynamics and Style
Dynamics are deliberately left open to interpretation. Try matching your dynamics to the style of whichever backing track you’re working with. This way, you’ll not only lock in rhythmically but also start to think musically about how your drumming fits into a bigger context.
