How to Play Like Vinnie Colaiuta

Leave a Comment / DRUM STUFF / By drevildick

We need to talk about VINNIE!! Vinnie Colaiuta, that is. But you already knew who I was talking about (and not just because of the title of this blog is ‘How to Play Like Vinnie Colaiuta’) because Vinnie, like Ringo and Buddy, doesn’t need a surname. OK, he’s not a household name but you probably own an …

10 Essential Drum Patterns

10 Essential Drum Patterns Here are 10 Essential Drum Patterns suitable for beginners. I often give these kinds of patterns to new students at the drum school. With the exception of pattern 7 (which includes a late snare on 4 +) they are all backbeats because they emphasis beats 2 and 4. The first real …

How I Became a Drum Teacher

Leave a Comment / DRUM STUFF / By drevildick

Before I answer that, let’s consider WHY I’m a drum teacher. I have always been passionate about drumming and believe that an excellent musical education can enrich one’s life culturally, socially and philosophically. Music has always been central to my enjoyment of life and I hope, as a tutor, I manage to communicate that to …

How to choose a drum kit

Leave a Comment / DRUM STUFF / By drevildick

Drummers Only, Leeds and Glasgow. “Most professionals have kits worth thousands of pounds; however, owning an expensive kit doesn’t make you a better drummer.  A great drummer can get music out of a cardboard box and a Quality Street tin”.  Buying a drum kit is a bit like buying a new kitchen in that the …

Richard's a great drum teacher! I would recommend him to both beginners and more advanced drummers. I had a gap from drumming for a good few years so... I've had quite a few teachers in the past and Richard's approach was perfect, he's patient and motivating and I look forward to every lesson- thank you !read more

My 10 year old son expressed an interest in learning to play the drums and we were very lucky to find Richard. My son absolutely loves his lessons... with him. He reports that he is patient, skilled, enthusiastic and an all-round great teacher. With his tuition my son recently achieved ‘distinction’ in his grade 1 drumming exam in less than a year!read more

My husband bought me drum lessons with Richard for Christmas and I have carried on since. He is very patient, takes his time but explains very well.... He pushes me rather than sticking just with a basic pattern, will add in flares to test me. I would happily recommend Richard for anyone of all ages.read more

I have been seeing Richard at Leicester drum school for several years and has taken me from complete beginner to taking my grade 5 soon. He's really... patient and lets you learn at your own pace. He's a great player himself and can accommodate a really broad range of styles.read more

After looking for a new teacher for several months I stumbled across Leicester Drum School. Shortly after I started having lessons I made great... progress and reached grade 5 in a very short space of time. With Richard’s teaching I have developed a solid foundation in rudiments which I previously did not appreciate and have developed the skills to play along with a lot of songs I couldn’t previously. I would highly recommend this drum school to current drummers wanting to improve or even people with no experience at all.read more

We have been really pleased with our son's drum lessons from Richard, he has progressed really well in a short time frame and really enjoys it too.... Richard obviously knows his stuff and how to interact with students to get the most out of them in a structured yet relaxed atmosphere, and is a great guy to top it off. Thanks!read more
