What is a Drum Trigger?

What is a drum trigger? Drum triggers, such as  Rolands RT-30Hr, convert strokes played on an acoustic drum into electrical signals. This may be done for various reasons, including:

  • triggering electronic sounds;
  • enhancing or modifying the acoustic drum’s sound;
  • controlling sound modules or software. 

Drum triggers offer several benefits, such as consistent sound, expanded sound possibilities, and live performance and recording capabilities. I converted my acoustic kit to a hybrid kit, using homemade drum triggers. However, that’s another story for another day. 

Setting Up a Drum Trigger

I have been using drum triggers for many years and they open up many creative possibilities. I find them easy to install. Here are the primary components of a typical drum trigger setup:

Sensor: The sensor is the core component of a drum trigger. It can be a piezoelectric sensor, a magnetic sensor, or other types designed to detect vibrations and impact. Sensors are attached to the drumhead, drum shell, or drum rim.  How they attach depends on the type of trigger and the specific drum you’re using.

Cable: The sensor is connected to a cable. This carries the electrical signal from the drum trigger to a processing unit or sound module. 

Sound Module or Processing Unit: The trigger signal is sent to a sound module or processing unit. This interprets the signal and generates the desired electronic sounds. Sound modules can include a wide range of drum and percussion sounds. They often allow drummers to customise and shape their electronic sound.

Settings and Controls: Many drum triggers have sensitivity controls that allow you to adjust the trigger’s response to the dynamics of your playing. You can configure parameters like threshold, gain, and velocity curves to fine-tune the trigger’s behavior.

Output Connections: The sound module or processing unit typically has output connections that can be connected to amplifiers, mixers, or other audio equipment for further sound reinforcement and processing.

Applications of Drum Triggers

Drum triggers have a variety of applications:

  • Sound Enhancement: They can be used to enhance the natural sound of an acoustic drum by layering electronic sounds or effects on top of it.

  • Converting Acoustic Kits into Electric Kits: I have done this to my teaching kit. I replaced the normal heads with mesh heads and fitted it with homemade triggers.
  • Hybrid Drumming: Drum triggers are often used in hybrid drum setups, where drummers combine acoustic and electronic elements for a more versatile sound.
  • Sample Triggering: Drummers can trigger samples or loops during live performances or in the studio, creating complex and layered rhythms.

  • Consistency: Drum triggers can help achieve consistent and reliable drum sounds, which is particularly important in recording situations.

  • Live Performance: In a live performance, triggers enable drummers to incorporate electronic sounds, such as synthesized percussion, without needing a separate set of electronic drums.

  • Recording: Drum triggers are valuable in the studio for shaping the drum sound and providing more control over the recording process.

Drum triggers come in various forms, including pad-style triggers, clip-on rim triggers, and drumhead-mounted triggers, each with its own advantages and use cases. They have become integral tools for modern drummers looking to expand their sonic possibilities and creative options.
